Due to its genesis PyRAT is extremely user-friendly and intuitive. It therefore has been very well-accepted among animal facility staff as well as scientists. Furthermore the functionality PyRAT provides in terms of the breeding management is extensive - without compromising the requirements for animal protection, scientific information management and budget management in any way.
PyRAT's design practically precludes the loss or corruption of data and enables a multitude of analyses. In comparison to other data management systems, especially the breeding management and work scheduling is supported in a very time-efficient manner.

Scionics is responsible of information technology management at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biology and Genetics in Dresden.
In 2001, when the director of the institute's animal facility could not find any product on the market to meet their requirements, he commissioned Scionics to develop an appropriate system. Accordingly PyRAT has been designed in close correspondence with its users and a strong focus on practicability and an intuitiveness. For over 18 months PyRAT has been fine-tuned with the assistance of a group of 5 beta-testing institutes.
Since the beginning of 2006 the result of this development process - PyRAT - has been available commercially and provides an immensely efficient and cost-saving data management solution to animal facilities throughout the world.
How is PyRAT currently being developed?
PyRAT is under continuous development by a number of programmers. Feedback and synchronising sessions with our costumers several times a year serve to identify the highest priorities for enhancing the product and realising the customer's requests to the greatest degree possible.
We aim at 3 to 4 updates per year and also develop special add-on modules for PyRAT. At the moment we are focusing on an advanced functionality for transgenic procedures as well as on an even more flexible system of user rights.
Of course, Scionics also offers individual software solutions by request and program alterations on the basis of individual agreement.
Who has been using PyRAT thus far?
Currently, the majority of PyRAT customers are German. These are, for example, several Max Planck Institutes, institutes of the Helmholtz community as well as university animal facilities. But, with its user-friendly design, its functionality and its excellent price-performance ratio, PyRAT has also attracted increasing interest globally. International clients are based in Austria, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Italy, Switzerland as well as the USA and New Zealand.
Is there an online test version of PyRAT?
Yes, we host a PyRAT demo version on this website. In the demo database you can set up a sample of virtual test animals, on which you can "practice" procedures, requests etc.
